About Vicryl
Vicryl is Ethicon's coated polyglactin 910 suture — a synthetic, braided, absorbable multifilament that has been the global reference standard for soft-tissue approximation since its introduction. Its predictable absorption profile — approximately seventy-five percent of original tensile strength retained at two weeks and complete absorption by about seventy days via hydrolysis — makes it suitable for procedures where temporary internal support is required and permanent suture material is not desired.

Polyglactin 910 with polyglactin 370 / calcium stearate coating
The standard Coated Vicryl suture. Predictable hydrolytic absorption, smooth knot run-down, and the broadest gauge and needle inventory in the family. The default choice when surgeons specify Vicryl without further qualification.
Coated Vicryl with triclosan
Coated Vicryl with the addition of triclosan, an antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial colonisation of the suture material itself. Clinical evidence supports a reduction in surgical-site infection rates in select indications.
Polyglactin 910 (irradiated for accelerated absorption)
An irradiated Vicryl variant with an accelerated absorption profile. Tensile strength essentially absent by ten days; complete absorption around forty-two days. Common in episiotomy repair, pediatric closure, and skin/oral mucosal closure where minimal residual material is preferred.
Loose ligature on reel
Coated Vicryl supplied on a sterile reel without a pre-attached needle. Used in ophthalmic and microsurgical contexts where the surgeon attaches a custom needle, and in ligation procedures.
Pop-off needle attachment
Standard Coated Vicryl with a controlled-release (pop-off) needle attachment that detaches with a controlled tug. Speeds up interrupted suturing where many short knots are placed.
Coated Vicryl, fine gauges
The microsurgical gauge range of Coated Vicryl — used in ophthalmic surgery, plastic and reconstructive procedures, and specialised vascular work where minimal-trauma fine sutures are required.
Coated Vicryl, heavy gauges
The heavy gauge range — for abdominal wall closure, mass closure, orthopaedic capsular work, and other high-tension applications where strong absorbable approximation is required.
Pre-cut Vicryl Plus
